Jeffrey's Art Collection

Image of Lowry painting 'Jetty at Knott End'Jeffrey's books cover a wide range of themes and introduce us to characters from all walks of life. However, there is almost always a character in his novels that has - or develops - a love of art.

In this way, art certainly imitates life, for Jeffrey himself is an avid art collector. He has been collecting art for over 30 years, and his personal collection includes works by artists such as Picasso, Mir?, Hockney, Dufy, Bonnard, Warhol and Sisley, as well as seven paintings by Vuillard and five by Lowry.

In an interview recorded for BBC Radio 4's Front Row in 1998, Jeffrey explained that while the Warhol collection might have been an investment, there are some paintings he will never sell. "I buy what I like - I've got a little picture by Lowry ('Jetty at Knott End' - oil on canvas, c.1957, shown above) that I bought 20 years ago. I bought it because... I just fell in love with it.
